Status of Education in Spain
Slowly there’s a change being made throughout the world making education a priority for multiple countries to give more funding’s and expansion for education. Education is being acknowledged as an important aspect for countries to grow and prosper. In 2000 the UN adopted Education for all and Millennium Development goals. These goals have laid out the expectation for a prosperous education. The goals we will be looking specifically for Spain is the Expansion of Early childhood care and education, Achieve gender parity and an increase of Adult Literacy.
The first goal we are looking at for Spain is early childhood education. This goal is often viewed as a important stepping stone in every child’s education. It is seen that at an early age is the proper time for development. This time is also considered essential to the success of the students as they begin to learn and understand the world at this age. There are findings of correlation that finds students who are enrolled in early education are more likely to continue in school. Spain has done a two cycle system to meet this goal of EFA for early childhood and education. The first cycle is nursery school done for ages 3 months up to 3 year olds. The second cycle done is for 3-6 year olds and it is preschool. “The first cycle of preschool is not free, although there are aid programs for families in need. The second cycle of preschool education in Spain is free for all students.”(Quijote, D). Both these cycles are not free for Spain making them private institution, but they are valued greatly for a child’s early childhood education. These cycles help Spain meet the EFA goals. Spain has a great way to meet the other goals mentioned before and we will see how they change other things in education to meet the goals.
Like many countries gender roles are changing over the decades. In Spain we see more equality and women are pursuing careers and getting jobs like men have been doing for decades. Spain is a very traditional country and women were thought to be caretakers at home (stay at home moms). Gender equality began in 1975 for Spain and we have seen since then women take many active roles through out Spain. Even though gender equality has been settled in the 70’s, there are still many discrepancies. Some discrepancies are larger than others of course but it is done towards male and female.
Thus far we have talked about the importance of early childhood education and the equality of genders in Spain. These two topics have shown great examples of the meaning Spain has for education and for the future and for the current young generation. Spain still cares for all generations to know literacy that is not a strong suit in every citizen in Spain. I believe this is caused by the lack of public education in Spain. As time has passed Spain’s becoming a stronger country and the percentages of adult literacy has only increased in the past decades. We see this because of Spain being able to reach another EFA goal increasing their education for the population thus increasing adult literacy.
It’s only been 15 years since the UN created the the EFA goals and since then Spain has applied the goals to their education. We have seen Spain’s way of proving education for children ages 3 months to 6 years old for their early childhood education requirements. We see gender roles fading in existence in Spain like in their education and even in other areas. Lastly we have seen Spain acknowledge the importance of literacy and increase the rate of literacy in adults in Spain. It seems that so far Spain is doing well in education and in reaching the goals of EFA. With the EFA goals we have seen Spain improve so much, and if they keep at it Spain will be achieving more and more education goals throughout time. With EFA goals their country will prosper and they will have positive outcomes for the Spaniard people.
